Place names: The historical treasure

Schluderns - The local, farm and field names in the upper Val Venosta were the subject of a recent in Vintschger Museum Schluderns by John Ortner held lecture.

Johannes Ortner is responsible for the collection of geographical names in South Tyrol expert. His collection is now up to 170 000 names. For example, he has found itself in Schluderns 930 place names. This farm and field names are often passed on orally from one generation to the next. The coexistence of German and Latin names has just had the upper Val Venosta Alps to the nature of the Romance languages. Many names are in all likelihood back much further than the Romanche and can only be explained by Indo-European word roots. The place names Oris, Schlanders or Schleis, may have a 3,000 year old history. Many place names or field names once had a specific meaning. So that the name Taufers go back to the tuber, which originally meant "valley becomes narrower," Solda has to do with sel: spring water, Schluderns meant wet, kotiger reason, Laces washing place Kortsch preserve and increase Tschars. The place name is to be interpreted with Prad "Prada", meadow, or easy. That the Tschött of aqua concetta, pond comes, was just one of hundreds of names that John Ortner said. That is not always all agree with his interpretations and other suggestions came from the audience, revived the lively discussion. It was clear that these well-founded historical descriptions very carefully and scientifically to be handled, since they are a treasure trove for the history of our country. ( Urinal )

Adventure Ski Tour Transalp

Over the hills

. Nine days, lots of peaks, nearly 16,000 meters: a crossing of the Alps on skis for many winter sports enthusiasts an absolute dream Robert Jacobi went with a former cross-country superstar on tour - and crashed on the second day in a crevasse.

The adventure of crossing the Alps on skis starts a little adventurous. The first day we get our skis on artificial snow slopes, in sunshine and temperatures that are reminiscent of a beach holiday on Lake Garda. Because down here in the famous ski resort of Madonna di Campiglio in Trentino, the slopes are green, this winter has little snow fell.

Peter Schlickenrieder we filmed with his cell phone when we are too slow for him. We are often too slow to him, which is not surprising, because Peter has won the 2002 Olympic Winter Games silver in the long run. Five years ago, he has managed his first Transalp tour, with up to 5,000 meters day, back at cross-country skiing, even the runs. A little later he was at the outside bet "Wetten, dass?" Faster than a PistenBully on a roller coaster ride through two rounds.

I know him, because we come from the same angle of Upper Bavaria and have mutual friends in the ski club. Last fall I had the courage to ask him whether we should work together to make a ski Transalp. To my surprise he said: For some time he searches for a route for crossing the Alps on skis, even for the ambitious: "Normal" is feasible. For this he needs a guinea pig.

The first day we already reached our first summit, Monte Vigo, then you'll find on a ski hut pizza with ricotta cheese and bacon. On the evening invites Peter the result of his filming on YouTube and Facebook high. First comment of a friend. "I thought, you make a serious hike, no snow safari" We take seriously the criticism - and get on the second day in a mountain climbing nightmare.

Dreams of pristine slopes

But first things first: The four of us want to cross the Alps from Trento to Oberstdorf. It is the end of March, perfect ski time, a total of nearly 16,000 meters ahead of us, more than 200 kilometers of track on ski slopes, glaciers - and hopefully also some splendid runs in untouched terrain.

We, that is except me and Peter and Philip Moeller Matthias Mayrhofer, two friends in Munich, berger drive, stamina and strong toned. On the first two days we also accompanied Peter's wife Andrea, who is qualified skiing instructor and tour guide. I am against an ambitious recreational athlete who has to fight for his new condition in every season. My skiing technique is enough to somehow get down any slope, but particularly in the area there is a lack of elegance.

That we start in the south, Peter had decided. "As for avalanches, it is safer to climb the southern slopes in the morning," says the Alpine pro. "Later, they are too soft in the sun. At noon then goes down to the north, hopefully in the powder snow. "

Fall into the crevasse

Of powder snow, we can only dream of, unfortunately, on the second day of the tour . The summit of Mount Cevedale to 3769 meters we reach the thickest fog and driving snow. Before us lie naked and open ice crevasses.

Nobody thinks of skiing, except perhaps Peter, who is considering abzuschwingen between Eisflanken. We strap on crampons, Matthias takes the rope from the pack. Not much time left until it gets dark, the rise has attracted, and a tough descent on foot was not scheduled.

Two poles are broken. Matthias' shoulder hurts, because he had traveled the previous day on the slopes with a short piece of fur and open ski boots until he fell amidst a crowd of children. Andrea falls to the hip in a snow hole, can free themselves but themselves. Despite the effort, almost 2000 meters behind us, it is capable of a smile.

When Matthias was able to escape only by a sudden movement in front of a column fall, we decide individually on the rope abzuklettern. Peter builds a stand. I slide out and hit me with the crampons, Peter keeps me dangling on a steep section. A glove is below me, my thermos is lost somewhere in the fog. Philip takes up the same way, but warned, moving as slowly as possible - face turned towards the slope, the ski poles as an anchor to hold.

Without the glove out in the wind

The biting wind can freeze your fingers, even more so, because I lack the right glove. Ten yards away, he is in relatively flat terrain. The snowpack looks harmless, I go a few steps. Suddenly the ground opens up beneath me, and I'm in an elevator straight down.

"Would be good if this stops soon," I feel in the case of the head. On a platform of snow and ice, I find support, three and a half feet deep - around me a strange world of giant ice crystals and wiry cones on me a bright hole. "Robert," I hear call Andrea, who was standing just next to me. I collect myself briefly, I note that I am unhurt except for a grazed hand. "I'm fine," I reply.

The rope knotted at the waist sure I ram the crampons into the ice wall and begin to climb. The wind is driving more and more snow in the column. The skis are yet to be stowed in my backpack. I brace myself over the edge and am now back on the surface of the glacier. "Suddenly you were gone," says Peter, who regarded me with astonishment, is the rest of the troops under slight shock. "But now you're back." For wiser words is this the wrong moment, he's right.

With GPS guidance to the refuge

We trudge on through mist and snow, has long been clear to us that we can do is the descent into the valley. Matthias is the first in the rope, Peter steers him by GPS to Rifugio Casati, a refuge at 3269 meters. "Left, 11 clock" or "right, 13 clock" are the commands that almost swallowed by the snow. To the rear, only the strand can be seen, but Andrea and Philip, hanging out hopefully.

Suddenly appeared before us at the cabin. There is even a light on. We fall into the arms. In the room we are the only guests. "No Powder Alarm," Philips is a dry comment on the miserable snow conditions in recent hours. I sit by the stove with chills, Matthias thaw his frozen fingers. The host provides us with pasta, meat and vegetables on the table, we devour in a few minutes.

"I have already anticipated that we dig a snow cave and spent the night in the bivouac," says Matthias. Andrea is easier, Philip looks thoughtful. Only Peter demonstrated composure in Upper Bavaria, he brings such a day does not seem out of the rest.

At night, the wind whistling around the house, there is snow in the morning and the view is almost as bad as the night before. We cross the Suldenspitze, another three thousand, and take the rope off almost to Sulden to numerous cracks and fractures around the glacier. The toll on the group dynamics, because if one uses the momentum to get late or never crashes, train all the top rope. Once it squeezed me from two fingers.

More than 30 kilometers in one day

Once at the bottom, helps us to Peter's prominence affordable accommodation in a friendly hotel - what a contrast to the previous night! While Matthew and Philip are in the sauna, I discover from the pool of a rag blue sky over the Ortler Mountains: The weather is getting better!

The next day we experience a magnificent tour of the Piz Chavalatsch from which we go through without spurt powder to the Grisons. On the other side of the valley, we climb up again. It is the longest day, with around 2,500 meters and more than 30 kilometers. The sun drives the Cevedale shock, now it is our constant companion.

My condition is better during the week, not bad - just getting up in the morning is becoming increasingly difficult. The balls are blistered and aching with every step. We pass through ski resorts such as Scuol, Ischgl and St. Anton and feel of luxury boutiques and apres-ski bars, such as aliens.

Two days later, after our last Summit, Green above the Warth, Vorarlberg, we run the skating step, yet nearly 20 miles through fairly flat terrain. Then we push ourselves on a track to cross country stadium in Oberstdorf. What we already shave the mountain bikers in their shorts? The real heroes of the mountains we are, that's for sure.

With steam beer and pork, we celebrate our crossing success. It has long been dark when we finally get off at Munich's main train station from the Regional Express - where we have nine days earlier entered the € City. The seats next to us have remained vacant, probably because we have shirts and socks and boots often never changed.

The Schlickenrieder route, as we christened it seems worthy of imitation - you do not want to volunteer in bad weather and little snow on the Cevedale. Skis and boots should be easy, the pack also. Not to be missed deer, tape or plaster against blisters, bruises and Voltaren to energy bars from sagging.

For the three amateur athletes from our team now begins a physically relaxing week. Not for Peter, rising three days later on the Croda Rossa. Of course, on skis. What else
